MSU’s family atmosphere lets students make lifelong friendships and have remarkable leadership opportunities. Students enjoy clubs, concerts, dances, theater, and both intramural and varsity sports. With small class sizes, students get to know most everyone on campus, including their professors, on a personal level while also having the opportunity to be involved in numerous activities.
Opportunities exist for students to be involved in student government, band, choir, drama, speech, sports, professional clubs, internships, on-campus jobs and more. The Cometeers, a student volunteer organization, bring personal service to life at MSU. MSU competes in the North Star Athletic Association of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics and offers women’s basketball, volleyball and softball and men’s football, baseball and basketball, as well as a co-ed cheerleading team.
MSU has instituted an integrated leadership program funded by the Edson and Margaret Larson Foundation. The purpose of the program is to build the leadership characteristics needed to prepare all MSU students to become future leaders.
MSU has a wide variety of programs from which to choose. For example, a special education program serves to meet the demand for special education professionals in North Dakota. The special education major can be incorporated within traditional teacher preparation or added to an existing degree. All courses within the major are available on campus and online. Other academic programs that have been added ad MSU in recent years include early childhood education (B.S. in education); communications (B.A. and minor); sports management (B.S. and minor); fitness and wellness (B.S. and minor); medical lab science (B.S.); special needs generalist (minor); studies in education (B.A.); and nursing (B.S.). MSU also offers a Master of Arts in Teaching degree, which is designed to help remedy the teacher shortage in North Dakota.
The MSU campus has undergone several extensive renovations in the past few years. Agassiz Hall, MSU’s largest residence hall, provides apartment- and suite-style living accommodations. A renovation and an education addition have upgraded the science and library buildings, providing a new home for MSU’s Division of Education and Psychology. And the health, physical education and recreation facilities have been upgraded and expanded to provide state-of-the-art facilities for students enrolled in this growing academic area at MSU.
MSU offers many opportunities for community involvement. In addition to educational offerings, community members are invited to enjoy a number of events and activities that take place on campus and to make use of numerous campus resources. These include the University and Community Fine Arts Series, which brings in world-class musicians each year; sporting events; library resources; a wellness center; and much more.
